Charlie Mariano, as., was born in 1923 in Boston, U.S.A..
As a son of Italian immigrants, Charlie Mariano began his long music career in Boston. From 1953-55 he played in the Big Band of Stan Kenton, together with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Eroll Garner; he later founded his own band together with his then wife Toshiko Akiyoshi. After he played with Charles Mingus for a while he went to Japan, were he came in contact with Asian music for the first time. Since 1971 Charlie has lived in Europe where he has played with leading musicians, already in 1975 with Jasper van't Hof and Philip Catherine in the jazz rock formation "Pork Pie", from 1977-98 with United Rock & Jazz Ensemble. At the beginning of the 70s, when he was often in India for his studies, Charlie played the Indian instrument nagaswaram. He recorded and went on tour with the Argentinean bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi and the songwriter Konstantin Wecker. Charlie Mariano never forgot that his idol is Charlie Parker, with whom he played himself.
LPs under his name, such as Mariano/Dodgion Sextet, Stan Kenton, Sheely Manne, Bill Holman, Frank Rossolino, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Charles Mingus, Elrvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Ebehard Weber, United Rock & Jazz Ensemble, Jasper van't Hof, Philip Catherine, Stu Goldberg, Don Alias, Gene Perla and others. Since 1996 he plays as a guest at the European Jazz Ensemble. At the moment he is playing in a trio with Daniel Humair and Ali Haurand.

Daniel Humair, dr., was born in 1938 in Geneva.
He is seen as one of the finest European percussionists in New Jazz. Humair already started to play percussion at the age of seven. In 1955 he became a professional musician, after winning the amateur prize at the International Zurich Jazz Festival. In 1958 he settled in Paris, where he played with Lucky Thompson, Oscar Pettiford, Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker. In 1959 he formed his first trio with the pianist Martial Solal. In the late 60s he became a member of the Ohil Woods "European Rhythm Machine", with the trio of the violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and of the organist Eddy Louiss. Later he went on tour regularly with Stephane Grappelli, J.L. Ponty, George Grunz, Jim Hall, Herbie Mann, Lee Konitz and Anthony Braxton, before he formed the most modern French trio of these years with bassist Henri Texier and saxophonist Francois Jeanneau. In the 70s he also started to work with Joachim Kühn and J.F. Jenny-Clark. Until the death of Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark, the trio was his main focus. Daniel Humair was always a man for "Special Occasions".
Ensembles feat. Bob Berg or John Scofield, David Friedman or Larry Schneider or his co-operation with Martial Solal and Michel Portal. In 1991 Humair was on tour with "Quatre fest. Enrico Rava, Franco D'Andrea and the bassist Miroslav Vitous. Since 1997 he has been a member of the trio with Charlie Mariano and Ali Haurand. Besides his musical work, Humair is a dedicated painter.

Ali Haurand, b., was born in 1943 in Viersen, Germany.
The bassist and indomitable engine of the European Jazz Ensemble is, with Gerd Dudek and Alan Skidmore, one of the founding members. After his studies at the Folkwang School in Essen in 1968 he founded the band "THIRD EYE" with the pianist Jan Huydts of the Netherlands. He has toured with Philly Joe Joens, Ben Webster, Don Byas, Bobby Jones, John Handy, Wilton Gaynair, Jan Akkermann & George Maycock. In 1976 Ali founded the European Jazz Quintet/Ensemble with the saxophonists Alan Skidmore, Gerd Dudek, Leszek Zadlo and the percussionist Pierre Courbois. From 1974-84 he played in the trio SOH with the percussionist Tony Oxley and Alan Skidmore, followed by The Quartet, The Trio, Sense and other projects. For many years he worked with Kenny Wheeler, Tony Coe, Eje Thelin, John Taylor, Enrico Rava, Manfred Schoof, Louis Sclavis, Philipp Catherine, David Friesen, Jiri Stivin, John Surman, Jon Christensen, Alan Jones, Charlie Mariano.
For a couple of years he has played in a trio with Charlie Mariano and the percussionist Daniel Humair, as well as a duet with the Prague flautist Jiri Stivin. In 1982, '84, '85 and '87 European Jazz Polls "Jazz Forum", mentioned with SOH, European Jazz Ensemble and as bassist. Since then and because of his 40 LPs and CD recordings and tours in Canada and Australia he became internationally popular in over 50 countries.
